Malawians for the past weeks have been inquisitive and curious why they’re not seeing the president of Malawi,His Excellency Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika physically and actively participating in campaign trails comparing to his counterparts.

President Mutharika is the presidential candidate of DPP/UDF Alliance in the forthcoming election slated on 23rd June 2020.

Our investigative reporter took it upon himself to enquire from him,why the absence and silence.

Below is their chat;

Reporter: Mr President,of late we have seen your running mate Hon Atupele Austin Muluzi and other senior officials criss crossing the country marketing your name as their presidential candidate and strangely,you are nowhere to be seen in action,what is the problem?

President Mutharika: I was employed by Malawians on 21st May 2014 and again on 21st May 2019(in which the opposition parties succeeded a soft coup to fraudulently dethroned me) Alas! Am still the president of Malawi,What am communicating here is that;the good welfare of 18 Millions Malawians is in my hands and my team.Am currently busy fulfilling the requirements of my job description in which shortly i will come out to report back to my employers(Malawians) what so far we have achieved,attained and intend to achieve on their behalf.

So far,i have worked with my team to give Covid-19 stimulus package to my employers such as;

General information

The government’s response plan includes US$20 million (0.25 percent of GDP) in spending on health care and targeted social assistance programs; this includes hiring 2000 additional health care workers. In addition, tax waivers will be granted on imports of essential goods to manage and contain the pandemic.

Minister of finance and Economic Planning Hon.J Mwanamveka

Economic stimulus measures

(e.g. loans, moratorium on debt repayments…)

Monetary and macro-financial

  • The domestic currency Liquidity Reserve Requirement (LRR) has been reduced by 125 basis points to 3.75 percent (aligned with the foreign currency LRR) and the Lombard Rate has been reduced by 50 percent to 0.2 percentage points above the policy rate.
  • An Emergency Liquidity Assistance (ELA) framework has been introduced to support banks in the event of worsening liquidity conditions and to provide support to banks on a case-by-case basis. However, financial sector buffers, including banks’ capital and liquidity buffers, are expected to counter risks to the banking system.
  • To support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), commercial banks and micro-finance institutions will be, on a case-by-case basis, restructuring SME loans and providing a three-month moratorium on their debt service. Fees on mobile money transactions have been temporarily waived to encourage cashless transactions.

In short,we have further,

Put aside billions of Kwachas,in which Thousands of Malawians who are less privileged will be receiving K35,000 monthly for 6 months to cushion them amidst the financial crisis caused by Covid-19.

We have cut down fuel prices.

We have intensified our health sector by buying more medical equipments and increase their salaries and allowances.

We have removed tax on all medical supply imports and many more other crucial areas.

Reporter: Your Excellency,we are seeing Malawi Congress Party’s presidential candidate Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera going around campaigning to take away the presidency from you,are you not threatened?.

President Mutharika: Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is desperately looking for a job whereas am arleady employed and satisfactorily fulfilling it,Chakwera has nothing to show for,what he has is long sentences of building castles in the air,on my side i have tangible and physical evidence of good and democratic leadership track record. Is it not the same Chakwera who went to town with his gang of Hrdc and Nsundwe terrorizing and demoralizing innocent Malawians,masquerading as protesters? How will then the same traumituzed Malawians vote for a party with innocent blood in their hands?.

Reporter: ha ha-No comment. Sir last question; Why Atupele,is he not young and inexperienced,will he compliment you to win the forthcoming election?

President Mutharika: Good question,I have said it on several occasions that I Arthur Peter Mutharika,after all is said and done,i want to be remembered as a president who gave equal and fair opportunities to the youths,i love empowering our young leaders.Look! I took Saulos Chilima from his Ceo Job and make him the state vice president of Malawi,today he is contesting against the party that ushered him into his current government position.

Coming to Atupele,i see him as a vibrant and visionary leader,patient,well collected and most importantly he has served under my administration in different ministerial positions,our relationship dates back to many years,i have tried,tested him and he has never given me any reason to doubt him.Atupele is developmental awake,he puts the country first before politics,he has worked with former president Dr Joyce Banda as well and left behind nothing suspicious or anything to cause alarm.There is time for everything and for everyone,this is the time for him to be my running mate and in future those with leadership aspirations will tender in their names at the coming party convention in 2023,when i will retire as the party’s leader.Now it’s time for DPP and UDF to work as one stronghold in unity,love and tolerance.

Reporter: Any last words to the nation?

President Mutharika: My fellow Malawians,this is the time to defend our democratic values and to protect the future our children,we will never have another Malawi,this is our home,our last bus stop. Choose the rightful leaders who will give you the best of the best of everything,We accept we are nothing but humans with weaknesses and strengths.I and Honourable Atupele Austin Muluzi are the people that you need to get things done with visible evidence.Forward ever!
