Organiser and Master of Ceremony for Dr Attati Mpakati Memorial Seminar Detained in Botswana

A Malawi National,Paliani Chinguwo who was one of the lead organisers for the Dr Attati Mpakati Memorial Seminar held last Sunday in Blantyre and also served as Master of Ceremony for the event, has been detained in Botswana.

Paliani Chinguwo was on his way from Blantyre after participating at the Dr Attati Mpakati Memorial Seminar.

Upon reaching the border from South Africa , he was detained for an hour and then later sent to quarantine amidst the prevalence of COVID-19 pandemic.

This follows a circular issued by Government of Botswana on 24 March 2020 that with immediate effect, all citizens of Botswana and residents should be quarantined for 14 days as a preventive measure against the spread of COVID-19 in Botswana which is yet to register a case.

The same circular stipulates that non-citizens and non-residents will not be allowed to enter Botswana as visitors .

In an interview with Current Affairs News sounding to be in high spirits , Paliani Chinguwo said:

“Am not worried at all, it actually gives me great pleasure to be in confined isolation for 14 days for having travelled to Malawi to do work in honor of Dr Attati Mpakati who is among our ancestors for the nation deserving veneration as heroes and matyrs. I am certain that this is like a personal sacrifice to the spirit of Dr Attati Mpakati and that whereever his spirit resides, it is well pleased. ”

The Memorial Seminar held last Sunday at Blantyre Cultural Centre was a third since 2018 and was hosted under the banner *Friends of Dr Attati Mpakati* which brings together a number of organizations and individuals such as Ex-Socialist League of Malawi (LESOMA) leaders, students, cadres; Ex-Detainees and Returnees Association of Malawi, Family and Friends of Dr Attati Mpakati, Lost History Foundation among others.
