Efforts to combat corruption in the country are said to be meeting stumbling blocks with the judiciary being in the limelight.
This comes in the work of the Zomba High Court quashing a warrant of arrest the ACB obtained for the FDH Financial Holdings, Chief Executive Officer, Thomson Mpinganjira who is said to have attempted to bribe the judges hearing the high profile presidential elections case.
The ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba said it’s very unfortunate that the whole High Court judge can stop the graft busting body can hinder efforts of the legally instituted body.
“It is so disgusting to see the whole legal minded official, a whole High Court Judge for that matter making such a questionable decision,
“I have kept silence on such issues, but now I will talk about. How can he quash a warrant of arrest, and why at midnight for that matter?”
The ACB has indicated that it will apply to the High Court to make sure that the trial process commences as soon as possible.
A Zomba based High Court Magistrate Chitsakamire quashed Mpinganjira’s warrant of arrest when he was being held at Blantyre police station and he immediately walked out to freedom
This is one of the typical example justifying that law enforcement agencies are not working in an independent manner.
According to our sources on the ground. It is believed the mentioned magistrate has a questionable character.
