It is astonishing to note,Malawi is a beautiful country with the most friendliest people in the world.

We are widely known as the warm heart of Africa. That simply defines us.

Another intriguing part that is well known about us,is the calm attitude we have towards issues of national importance.

You may wish to know,we have a rich cultural background, that may thrill you to bits.

Lilongwe is our capital city.

The synonym slogan for Malawi is “flames of fire”
In reality, Malawi means ‘Fire flames‘, evoking the rising sun scintillating on the waters of the lake. This is clearly drawn on the flag of the country

We have 5 major lakes and the biggest, deepest and longest is Lake Malawi, which is among in the list of top 10 longest lakes in Africa.

Regardless all these great facts.Malawi lacks the machinery of communication to disparse, promote and market information about it’s fascinating wonders.

For instance,we have a statue in our capital city at the roundabout of our parliament building which is surrounded by the mausoleum of our late first prime minister and president Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda and the magnificent Umodzi Park which is comprised of Office blocks and 5 star President Walmont Hotel.

An aerial view of the said roundabout of statue

The saddening part is that nobody has a clue(or maybe there are people who do but are not telling it all)what exactly the statue is meant to dignify and symbolize.

Closer look at the statue.

The information vacuum has promoted a speculative culture on social platforms.

Some are insinuating that it stands for a middle finger, depicting a “f**k you” gesture.

Others are saying it is encouraging people to cut down trees as it has trees which were cut.

And others say it resembles the module at Banja La Mtsogolo, which the family planning counsellors uses to teach people how to wear a condom.

While a senior govt official, who sought to remain anonymity said “the initial plan was to erect a hand in a jacket carrying a torch which inside has a glowing flame surrounded by bush and trees, unfortunately the art work was interrupted, construction was underway due to the Anti-Jane Ansah’s demos,or so he claims. What you see now is unfinished work and i know it doesn’t make sense but believe you me,once the whole work is accomplished, you will agree with me,it will bring an exquisite touch to the city”.

The concept of these structures were spearheaded by Lilongwe City Council and Beautify Malawi Trust(BEAM).

Beam Trust is a brainchild of our first lady Prof Getrude Mutharika.

Their mission is to decorate and promote sanitation in our cities and not forgetting the rights of women, girl child in terms of safe motherhood, education and empowerment.

Which has seen her receiving many donations from numerous International and local organizations

Through this initiative she has been awarded a honorary doctorate degree of philosophy in environmental management from the University of Malawi(Unima) on 24th February 2016.

In November 2017.She was also awarded a honorary professorship degree in Global Health by Perkin school of Public health,a school from China.

Receiving her professorship degree

That’s much we know about it.

The unanswered question still remains, how will this statue beautify Malawi?

Was it meant to familiarize with the USA statue of Liberty?

The streets has it,this statue has costed us K87 Million so far.Perhaps, these are just allegations. And we shall continue to speculate and monger news, until,we are officially informed what they’re and stand for.

I submit.
