Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Minister, Kondwani Nankhumwa has assured Malawian that next season food shortage problems will not be an issue because His Excellency Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika has ordered the Ministry to undertake extra measures like buying maize flour and upfront tendering of maize procurement for short and long terms as guarantee that next season the country has enough maize stocks.
Nankhumwa who was speaking in Lilongwe on 31st of January, 2020 at the launch of Annual Agriculture Joint Sector Review Meeting which was held at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe.
“My Ministry is working on youth and women Flagship program aimed at increasing youth and women participation in agriculture value chains by removing impending elements to the youth and women involvement and empowerment,” said the upbeat Minister who is also MP for Mulanje Central Constituency.
Nankhumwa also announced that Government has fast tracked the Medicinal Cannabis Bill and it will go on the floor in Parliament soon.
One of the Speakers Irish Ambassador hailed President Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika for his zeal to improve food security in the Country. He further asked Government to accelerate the investment landscape in order to attract private sector in Agriculture.
Also in attendance were Vice Chancellor of LUANAR, Prof George Kanyama Phiri,CEO of NASFAM, Ambassador Gerry Cunningham of Ireland amongst others.
