Some call him a political whore, some call him disgruntled, some call him a vagabond, but he is known by his sharp talking and his name is Councilor Leonard Chimbanga.
It never rains but it always pours for this seasoned politician, he was caught pants down a while ago when a conversation he was having with his former party bedmate, leaked in the airwaves of the social media.
In the Leaked conversation a pomped up Chimbanga emphasized that he has a huge network of DPP cadres that are supporting him. This invisible hand is pushing for a massive support on the candidature of the Now UTM party president, who also by virtue of the 3rd February’s court order is the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, and a proposed vice presidency of Hon. Kondwani Nankhumwa. These beleaguered youth, as per the
conversation, comprises of well known DPP cadets; Mike Tembo, Bob Chimkango and Grey Chapita(both Bob and Grey have said, they have no knowledge about this)to mention a few.
Following the outcome of the famous constitutional court case, where the losing candidates contested the 21st May 2019 tippexed elections, it has not been all rosy in the DPP camp, which happened to have been defendants in the same case. The court order annulled the legitimacy of the outcome as it ruled that the decision to declare Professor Arthur Peter Munthalika, as winner was flawed. As such fresh polls are to be administered. DPP have therefore found themselves at a crossroads where they do not have many options as to who should lead them to the elections that are due in some 133 days.
Chimbanga highlighted that the DPP cadets are planning a massive sit down where they will not campaign for the party should their demands be thrown out in the same manner the party’s court applications are; among other things he said their demands include:
1. That Rt Hon Chilima be accorded all benefits of a Vice President of the country as mandated by the constitution. He stressed the need for the party’s politburo to respect Dr Chilima.
2. That Norman Paulosi Chisale be booted out from decision making arena
3. That lady Getrude Munthalika remain in the shadows and not to have direct links with the parties affairs.
4. That Everton Chimulirenji be a forgotten tale, and as we have it, he is already in the pipeline for an embassy posting.
5. That Mr Mphepo and other old members be booted out of the general decision making positions as they had led to the embarrassing loss of the party.
6. That there should be a massive clean up at youth directorate where uneducated, mafiosos who can not inspire public nor can not ably speak English on any forum be booted out.
Chimbanga claimed that he together with Bob and a whole lot of other cadets are championing the change. They believe that their network and it’s demands will force the party to action, which among other thing will influence firing of Dr Jane Ansa Sc from MEC chair position.
He lamented the treatment they got after the elections, where the politburo shut down the doors for the cadets, by not even responding to their phone calls. Presently the social media is silent. The cadets have put their pens down. They believe they have the capacity to make or break their party.
In this heated conversation Chimbanga who comes from Dedza district, a Chewa rooted background, trashed his tribe as a group of uneducated, messed up, useless and foolish tribe. Who do not even know whether Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda is still in power or not. He went on to say the Chewa people who sees only MCP as a party to follow would rather be left to suffer than have his support.
He feared for any alliance between MCP which is conservative with any party in the country; he noted that MCP do not have respect for UTM who despite courts trying to unite them through it’s ruling, they felt UTM had nothing to offer, nor their party president Chilima.
He stressed that the Chewa people, a tribe whom the MCP rides on as foolish in that they can not see beyond their noses and appreciate a good leader Chilima is and that if Chilima opted to partner with MCP than with DPP, he will be digging his political grave, as MCP will use and dump him, a party that only filed it’s petition because UTM had but who claims UTM had a weaker case than them, while if he is to partner with DPP, he will be respected and supported by all members of the party.
When asked if this was not one of his strategies to rejoin UTM party which ushered him into the Civic offices, Councilor Chimbanga said he was happy at DPP and had a huge support by leaders in DPP.
